Do you really understand yourself?

Welcome, I’m Dr. Nuno Cristiano de Sousa and I’m a psychoanalyst!

With this video you will get a better understanding on how your personality grows.

Awareness on how we think and behave gives us freedom. It gives us the power to make healthy choices on what we want to do with our lives.

Let’s think about it!

A simple definition to start with is: a combination of biological traits that develop over time.

But what are those traits, and what does it mean that they develop?

On birth, we have a biological, genetic potential.

This is the source of our personality.

It is not a transposition from our parents; it is more of a blend in which the result differs from the original ingredients.

Imagine…

Take the colours red and yellow (mom and dad), mix them, and the result is orange (us, the baby)! We may develop some traits similar to our parents, but it is mostly because of socialising with them while we were children.

Using this example with colors…

If we use it as a depiction of personality, we could say that we are born with a genetic palette that becomes richer and more complex as we grow.

I like to illustrate this with the image of a 3D spectrogram!

Each color is a nuance of a trait, and they exist in different intensities.

The more sophisticated your personality is, the more colours you have, and the more balanced they are.

However, if the personality doesn’t develop much, or if it becomes mis-constructed, we can say that that person’s colour palette works with very few colours, and some may even be off balance.

This harmony will reflect on how we approach life and on how fulfilled we feel.

Which factors influence the healthy development of our personality?

As we go through life, we are shaped by the relationship with the people we meet and the experiences we live.

If life goes well enough, these interactions help up grow healthy, however… If we go through painful experiences or toxic relationships, our personality will get “injured”.

In case that happens, as life challenges us with different people and situations, our responses won’t be helpful, and suffering will come from that! That’s when mental health complications show.

When we are young, our ability to think about ourselves is immature, and that makes our personality vulnerable to education. By the time we reach teenage hood it is expected that we start to think based on our experiences and thoughts. We grow from our life experience!

This means that as we explore the world, we figure out the things we like and dislike, and the ways to relate to them.

If we go back to the initial simple definition of personality, and we fine tune it, now we could say that:

Personality is our unique combination and strength of personality traits, that shows on what gives us pleasure and displeasure, and on how we deal with those.
All of us share some common traits, nobody has a unique trait. What makes us unique is the combination and the extent of each one.

My questions to you are…

… How much of your personality do you think is spontaneous?

Do you really know what you like and dislike? Do you use healthy strategies to deal with both?
